Manuscript Types
The Jurnal Desain Lingkungan Binaan Indonesia welcomes manuscripts that present architectural design works, design-based research, design evaluation, and methods or tools that support the design process. Authors should select the manuscript type that best represents the primary objective and contribution of their submissions.
1. Architectural Design Article
An Architectural Design Article presents an architectural or built environment design project as a substantive scholarly contribution. The manuscript should explain the design problem, project context, conceptual framework, design objectives, and strategies employed to develop the proposed design. Design outcomes should be presented through appropriate visual and technical representations, such as site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations, diagrams, models, or visualizations, accompanied by a clear explanation of the design rationale.
The manuscript should demonstrate how the design responds to its functional, spatial, environmental, social, cultural, or contextual requirements. Submissions must provide critical and scholarly justification for the proposed design rather than merely documenting a project or presenting architectural drawings.
This manuscript type is suitable for design projects developed through architectural studios, final-year projects, or other design processes, provided that the work is presented as a coherent scholarly article with a clear design contribution.
2. Design Research Article
A Design Research Article presents research in which the design process serves as a means of generating, exploring, or testing new knowledge and design solutions. The manuscript may involve design exploration, iterative development, experimentation, prototyping, simulation, or the systematic comparison of design alternatives.
The article should clearly identify the research problem, explain the research and design approach, document the relevant stages of the design process, and discuss the findings and implications arising from the investigation. The design outcomes should demonstrate how the research contributes to the development of design knowledge, principles, strategies, or approaches applicable to the built environment.
This manuscript type is appropriate for studies in which the design process and the knowledge generated through that process constitute the central contribution of the article.
3. Design Evaluation Article
A Design Evaluation Article critically examines the quality, performance, effectiveness, or limitations of a design based on clearly defined criteria and an appropriate evaluation approach. The subject may include proposed design alternatives, existing buildings, built environment projects, or completed architectural and spatial interventions.
The manuscript should explain the evaluation objectives, criteria, methods, and evidence used to assess the design. Relevant approaches may include functional and spatial analysis, environmental performance assessment, user experience evaluation, post-occupancy evaluation, or comparative assessment of design alternatives.
The article should present and interpret the evaluation findings, identify the strengths and limitations of the design, and explain their implications for design improvement, decision-making, or future practice. Descriptive accounts without substantive evaluation and critical analysis are not sufficient.
4. Design Methods and Tools Article
A Design Methods and Tools Article presents the development, adaptation, validation, or application of methods, instruments, workflows, or computational tools that support architectural design and built environment design processes.
The manuscript may address design methodologies, analytical frameworks, evaluation instruments, simulation workflows, computational design techniques, digital modeling approaches, or other tools that assist designers in exploring alternatives, assessing design performance, or making design decisions.
The article should explain the need for the proposed method or tool, its underlying principles, development or implementation procedures, and its application or testing. Where appropriate, the manuscript should also discuss its effectiveness, limitations, and potential applicability to other design contexts.
The principal contribution should be a clearly articulated methodological or practical advancement that can inform or support design research and professional practice.
Manuscript Type Selection
Authors should select the manuscript type according to the primary objective and principal contribution of their work. Manuscripts may contain elements of more than one category; however, the selected type should reflect the dominant focus of the submission.
All manuscripts must demonstrate scholarly rigor, a clear contribution to architectural design or the built environment, and appropriate supporting documentation. The submission of design drawings, visualizations, or project documentation alone does not guarantee acceptance. All submissions are subject to editorial screening and the journal's applicable peer-review policies.
