Artificial Intelligence Policy

Jurnal Lingkungan Binaan Indonesia (JLBI) adapts the standards of publication ethics as stated in the Core Practices of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE). These include the policies regarding authorship and contributorship, the procedure for handling allegations of misconduct, handling of complaints and appeals, handling of conflicts of interests/competing interests, policies on data and reproducibility, ethical oversight, intellectual property, AI use, journal management, peer-review process, and post-publication discussions and corrections.

Journal Lingkungan Binaan Indonesia (JLBI) is committed to upholding academic integrity, scientific rigor, and copyright ethics in all published research. In response to the rapid advancement of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), JLBI establishes clear rules regarding the permissible, prohibited, and transparent use of AI technologies for Authors, Editors, and Peer Reviewers.

1. Basic Principles of GenAI Use

  • Originality and Human Intellectual Ownership: AI tools must not be used to fully generate manuscripts without human intellectual contribution. All core concepts, research designs, data analyses, and conclusions must originate from human authors.

  • Transparency: Any use of AI in manuscript preparation must be explicitly disclosed in the designated Declaration of AI Use section.

  • Human Oversight: Authors remain fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, authenticity, and scientific integrity of any content edited or generated with AI assistance.

2. Policy for Authors

Permissible Use
  • Language & Grammar Enhancement: Using AI tools to improve sentence structure, grammar, clarity, or translate text, provided the original meaning remains intact.

  • Reference & Formatting Assistance: Utilizing AI tools to organize citations or format references according to the IEEE style.

  • Data Processing Assistance: Utilizing AI tools to assist in processing statistical data or organizing tables/charts, provided the original raw data is authentic and the methodology is clearly explained.

Prohibited Use
  • Content Generation: Generating core text, literature reviews, discussions, or conclusions via AI prompts without human research.

  • Synthetic Image or Data Fabrication: Generating fake datasets, manipulated figures, or AI-generated images.

  • Authorship Status: AI tools cannot be listed as an author or co-author of a manuscript. AI lacks legal personality and cannot take responsibility for copyright or ethical compliance.

AI Detection & Threshold
  • JLBI strictly monitors AI-generated content during the desk-screening phase using dedicated AI detection software (e.g., Turnitin AI Detection / Compilatio).

  • Maximum Safe AI Threshold: Manuscripts must maintain an AI-generated content score below 20%. Naskah exceeding this threshold will be returned to authors for major revision or face immediate desk rejection.

AI Use Declaration Template

Authors using AI tools must include a declaration statement in their manuscript before the Acknowledgments:

  • If AI was used:

"The authors acknowledge the use of [INSERT AI TOOL NAME & VERSION, e.g., ChatGPT-4, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Grammarly] to assist with [INSERT SPECIFIC PURPOSE, e.g., language editing, grammar checking, translation]. The prompts used were '[INSERT PROMPTS USED].' The output was thoroughly reviewed, verified, and edited by the authors. The authors maintain full responsibility for the content of this manuscript."

  • If no AI was used:

"No artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation, writing, or analysis of this manuscript."

3. Policy for Editorial Team & Desk Evaluation

  • Human Judgment: Editors must perform all intellectual evaluations and editorial decisions. AI software must not be used to automatically accept, reject, or grade manuscripts.

  • Confidentiality: Editors must not upload submitted manuscripts (or parts thereof) into public AI platforms or LLMs, as this violates author confidentiality, copyright, and data privacy rights.

  • Administrative Checks: Editors are permitted to use journal-approved, secure software solely for administrative checks (plagiarism screening and AI detection).

4. Policy for Peer Reviewers (Mitra Bestari)

  • Strict Prohibition: Peer reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading submitted manuscripts, abstracts, tables, or figures into AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) to analyze or write peer-review reports.

  • Confidentiality & Ethics: Submitting manuscript files to external AI models breaches reviewer confidentiality agreements.

  • Authenticity of Reviews: Review comments must reflect the reviewer’s independent professional expertise and critical evaluation. Reviews detected to be produced by GenAI will be rejected, and the reviewer may be removed from JLBI's reviewer panel.
